Fees and limits

Every number, on one page.

Dona’s business is charging a small fee on money people almost lost, so the fees are stated plainly and early. Adding a card is free. Dona charges when money leaves your wallet, never when it arrives.

How the fee works

Transfers under $100.00 cost $1.00 plus Stripe fees. Transfers of $100.00 and over cost $2.50 plus Stripe fees. The boundary reads as under $100.00 and $100.00 or over, so a $99.99 transfer is $1.00 and a $100.00 transfer is $2.50.

The fee comes out of your wallet on top of the amount you enter, so you receive exactly the figure you typed. If you have $48.00 in your wallet you can send $47.00, and the $1.00 fee leaves the wallet alongside it. The transfer screen shows the fee live under the amount as you type, and the most you can send is your balance minus the fee on that amount.

Stripe’s own processing cost is absorbed into that one figure for display. You see one fee, never a separate Stripe line.

Worked examples

Send $12.40 to your bank$12.40 · $1.00 fee · $13.40 leaves your walletYou receive $12.40
Send $48.00 to your bank$48.00 · $1.00 fee · $49.00 leaves your walletYou receive $48.00
Send $163.40 to your bank$163.40 · $2.50 fee · $165.90 leaves your walletYou receive $163.40

A $12.40 card, pulled and sent on its own, costs $1.00 to move, so thin cards are worth pooling: add a few, then move the total out once.

Limits

The minimum transfer to your bank is $4.00. Below that the button is disabled and the screen states the gap, for instance “You’re $2.60 from being able to move this out.”

Your wallet holds $500.00 at most. A card that would push the balance past $500.00 is refused before Dona charges it, so move money out first and come back to the card. The add-a-card screen accepts up to $500.00 on one card.

One transfer at a time. While one is on its way, a second is refused until it lands. Transfers arrive in one to two business days.

After 90 days sitting above the minimum with nothing moved out, Dona prompts a transfer in the app and emails you. Your money stays in your wallet until you move it.

Paying once

$499.00 once, and for ten years that account pays no transfer fee, no Stripe fee, and has no minimum transfer. One hundred people hold a pass at a time. Against the $2.50 tier, the pass pays for itself after 200 transfers; against the $1.00 tier, after 499.

Which cards

Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Discover gift cards, the kind that can be spent anywhere. Store cards are not supported. Dona finds out what is left by charging the card: you say roughly what is on it, Dona charges that, and works down on an insufficient-funds decline until it finds the real figure. A card that turns out to hold less than you said is a normal outcome, not an error, and you are told the real number.
